Concert

Robert Bentall

Surge (5.1 - 10mins)

Surge sees the completion of a long-desired task: to incorporate the viola da gamba into a piece of acousmatic music. The piece unzips itself (literally) into a soundworld of sparse chords, textures and pulsations, gradually seeing more electronica influences filter in. Inspired partly by Ake Parmerud’s Renaissance (1994), I wanted to create a piece in which the instrument’s natural sonorities would be present. Different musical spaces deliberately wade into each other, heightening the sense of movement in Surge.
